Back to School Mental Health Checklist for Families

Introduction

As back to school approaches, many families feel a rush of both anticipation and anxiety when thinking about the upcoming school year. While back-to-school season can bring a sense of routine and possibility, it also stirs up worries about learning, behaviour, and emotional wellness for children and teens. Amid the scramble for school supplies and organizing schedules, back to school mental health and cognitive needs can be unintentionally overlooked.

Here at the Cognitive & Interpersonal Therapy Centre (CITC) in Toronto, we specialize in supporting children, teens, and their families as they navigate the back-to-school transition by addressing common learning challenges with the help of a child psychologist. Whether through psychoeducational or ADHD assessments, therapy for kids, or family-based therapy, our team is here to help children thrive emotionally and academically this school year through our comprehensive back to school mental health services.

Daily Routines Are Foundational, But Not Always Enough

Parents often hear the same tips each September: encourage a consistent sleep schedule, limit screen time before bed, pack nutritious lunches, and stick to a morning routine. Although these habits do matter, they’re not always enough.

This is where routine meets reality. For some children, underlying challenges with executive functioning support, attention regulation, or learning processing make even the best-intentioned strategies feel impossible to implement. Even highly verbal or socially engaged children can find themselves overwhelmed by classroom demands, peer pressure, or academic tasks.

If your child appears “fine” on the surface but is having recurring challenges with focus, mood, or organization, child therapy with an experienced provider or a psychoeducational assessment can be a supportive next step. Our team at CITC offers evidence-based therapy and assessments for children to help address these underlying patterns.

Red Flags: What Indicates a Need for a Psychoeducational or ADHD Assessment?

While some learning and attention issues are obvious, many go undetected for months, or even years because symptoms can be subtle, inconsistent, or misattributed.

According to the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO) and the Canadian Psychological Association, here are signs that may indicate your child could benefit from a psychoeducational or ADHD assessment:

  • Difficulty following multi-step instructions
  • Avoidance of reading, writing, or math activities
  • Changes in mood that align with school stress
  • Feedback from teachers about attention or focus
  • Frequent homework battles or perfectionistic meltdowns
  • Drop in confidence, grades, or classroom participation

These concerns can stem from underlying learning disabilities, attention challenges, or cognitive processing issues. Parents often misattribute them to motivation or maturity, but a professional psychoeducation or ADHD assessment can clarify what’s really going on.

CITC offers both in-person Psychoeducational and ADHD assessments in Toronto and virtual ADHD assessments across Ontario, making it easier than ever to access answers and support.

What a Psychoeducational or ADHD Assessment in Toronto Can Reveal

At CITC, our assessments are comprehensive and personalized. Whether your child is struggling in the classroom, at home, or both, we offer evaluations that assess:

– Cognitive abilities

– Academic achievement

– Executive functioning

– Attention and processing speed

– Social-emotional development

These evaluations are completed by our team of child psychologists and their supervised practicum students, with results discussed in a clear, supportive feedback session. If a diagnosis is warranted, we provide individualized next steps that help you and your child move forward with clarity and confidence.

Back to School Mental Health Checklist for Families

Not sure whether your child’s concerns warrant professional support? Use this mental health checklist for families as a guide:

  • Is my child expressing school-related dread, avoidance, or physical symptoms (headaches, stomachaches)?
  • Are there ongoing attention, memory, or organization difficulties?
  • Has a teacher ever raised learning or behavioural concerns?
  • Is my child still struggling despite tutoring or extra help?
  • Have there been changes in mood, appetite, or sleep?
  • Do I feel uncertain whether my child’s challenges are typical or more serious?

If you’ve checked off a few items on the list, it may be time to consider a psychoeducational or ADHD assessment

CITC Assessment FAQs

Do you have some questions about assessments at CITC? Reach out to our clinical coordinator today! In the meantime, here are some answers to common questions we get about psychoeducational and ADHD assessments.

What Happens After an Assessment?

An assessment is just the beginning. At CITC, we help families not only understand their child’s learning or emotional needs, but also create a roadmap to address them. Post-assessment supports may include:

CBT for kids dealing with anxiety, perfectionism, or emotional dysregulation

Child therapy for stress, school transitions, or peer relationships

Family therapy to support structure, communication, and consistency

– Recommendations to help teachers and schools tailor academic support

How long does an assessment take?

The length of an assessment at CITC depends on the amount of testing needed to determine a child’s cognitive abilities, executive functioning, academic achievement and more. Typically, assessments begin with an interview session with you and your child, followed by 2-3 testing sessions, any additional informant interviews (e.g. parent interviews, teacher interviews) and finally a feedback session.

Do you offer a sliding scale for assessment fees?

At CITC we do offer reduced psychoeducational and ADHD assessment fees with our practicum students who are closely supervised by a clinical psychologist. Going with a practicum student for an assessment is a great way to receive the same high-quality assessment you would with a clinical psychologist, at a reduced rate.

Can ADHD assessments be done virtually in Ontario?

Yes! CITC offers secure, virtual ADHD assessments across Ontario with the same clinical accuracy as in-person evaluations.

Our team believes that assessments and therapy are tools for empowerment, not labels. When children understand how their brain works and what supports help, they can begin the new school year with confidence.
