What is ASD?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that shapes an individual’s ability to perceive and interact with the world around them. It’s called a spectrum for a reason—people with ASD can experience a wide range of strengths and challenges, and no two people with ASD are the same.
Signs & Symptoms
ASD can show up in different ways and at different times in a person’s life. Some children may display signs early on, like not responding to their name while others might not show symptoms until later, such as difficulties with language or social interactions.
Here are some common signs of ASD:
- Social Challenges: Difficulty with social interaction and communication (e.g., reduced eye contact, lack of facial expressions, low interest in peers)
- Behavioral Patterns: Engaging in repetitive movements, phrases, or behaviours, or insisting on rigid routines.
- Sensory Sensitivities: Heightened or reduced sensitivity to sensory environment including (but not limited to) sounds, sights, or textures.
- Restricted Interests: Intense focus on specific objects or activities, often to the exclusion of other interests.
Diagnosing ASD
Diagnosing ASD requires comprehensive testing that considers a person’s behaviour, communication, and developmental history. It’s not about labels—it’s about uncovering the information needed to provide tailored and effective support. Our psychologists specialize in ASD assessments and are here to help you or your loved one toward clarity and understanding. Learn more about our ASD Assessments here.
Psychotherapy for ASD
There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for ASD. At CITC, we use evidence-based treatment approaches that can help people with ASD and their families. Below are some therapeutic approaches we offer for ASD:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): For older adolescents and adults with ASD, CBT can be really effective in managing co-occurring symptoms such as anxiety, depression or self-esteem.
