Frequently Asked Questions

What if I change my mind and do not want to continue?

Scheduling an appointment does not obligate you to make any ongoing commitments. You have the option to discontinue treatment at any time. As long as you notify us at least two business days in advance, there will be no charges or consequences. Please remember that participation in treatment is entirely voluntary.

Can psychologists prescribe medications?

Psychologists are not licensed to prescribe medications. However, they can provide you with a mental health diagnosis, which you can then bring to your family doctor to explore medication options.

What are your rates?

Our rates vary depending on the therapist’s level of training and years of experience. They also align with the recommended guidelines by the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA) and the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

Note that services provided by psychologists and psychotherapists are not covered by OHIP. However, most extended health benefit plans offer coverage for services provided.

Do you offer direct billing?

We offer direct billing with certain providers. When scheduling your first appointment, please inquire with our Clinical Coordinator to determine if your provider supports direct billing for psychological or psychotherapeutic services. If eligible, our team will set up direct billing for you, and your provider will be billed directly after each session at CITC. Please note that while Sun Life is one of the providers we often work with, they do not offer direct billing for psychological or psychotherapeutic services. However, our receipts are designed to be insurance-friendly, allowing you to submit them to your provider for reimbursement after making a direct payment for your session.

How can I check whether therapy will be covered by my extended health benefits plan?

When checking your coverage for therapy, there are a few pieces of information you will need:

  • Type of Therapy Covered: Determine what type of therapy your plan includes. Check if it specifically covers psychological services, psychotherapeutic services, or if they mention mental health treatment more broadly. Knowing this will help us to decide whether to match you to a psychologist or psychotherapist, ensuring you maximize your coverage and minimize out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Therapists’ License Information: Inquire about your therapists’ license number and their licensing body. It will be either the College of Psychologists and Behavioural Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). All registered psychologists and psychotherapists should be listed in your provider’s database. With their name, license number, and licensing body, you can verify whether your provider covers their services.
  • Consultation and Session Rates: Inquire about your therapist's initial consultation and treatment session rates. Some providers cover a specific amount per session up to a maximum limit (e.g., $250 per 60-minute session until a total of $2000 is reached). Others may cover a total maximum amount (e.g., $2000).
  • Psychological Testing Coverage: If you are seeking a psychological assessment (e.g., ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Giftedness), your provider may offer additional coverage under a heading titled psychological testing or assessment. The same payment structure differentiation applies for assessments. Some providers cover a certain amount until a maximum amount is reached (e.g., 500 per 60-minutes, until $5000 is reached). Other plans cover a maximum amount (e.g., $5000).
  • Student Therapists: If you are being seen by a therapist that is being supervised by another therapist at CITC, you need to check whether your plan cover’s their supervisor’s services. This is because all receipts will be submitted through the supervisor’s name, licensing information, and signature.

This information will help you navigate your coverage more effectively and ensure you receive the best possible care while managing costs.

Do you offer online or phone therapy?

Yes, we offer online therapy through secure, encrypted video software via Owl Practice, that can be accessed on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. We can also provide services by phone. This allows us to service clients throughout Ontario, not just those in the GTA.

Do you provide legal assessments?

We do not offer specialized services for assessments required for legal contexts (e.g., child custody and access, parental competence, probation assessments, child abuse, etc.)

Do I need a referral?

No, you do not need a referral to schedule a consultation for treatment or assessment at CITC. You may contact us directly. However, we welcome referrals from GPs, psychiatrists, other mental health providers, insurance companies, and others.

How do I start?

Reach out to our Clinical Coordinator via email (office@citcassociates.com), phone (647-508-2020), or our online contact form.

During this initial contact, we’ll conduct a brief screen to capture your needs and preferences. Our clinical coordinator will provide all the necessary information and book your first appointment with one of our therapists. You can also ask questions and learn more about the treatment options available at CITC. Once we have enough information, we’ll match you with a therapist who best suits your needs.
