Why Starting Therapy with a Practicum Student Might Be the Best Decision You Make

We get it—the words “student therapist” may raise some concerns at first glance. You might picture someone fresh out of undergrad fumbling through awkward advice while nervously holding a clipboard. But the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

Practicum students are graduate-level therapists—often in the final stages of their Master’s or PhD training—who have spent years studying human behaviour, clinical theory, and therapeutic techniques. And here’s the kicker: they’re not doing this alone.

Every session is overseen by a licensed Clinical Psychologist (someone fully licensed with a PhD and years of experience). That means your therapist isn’t just thoughtful and motivated—they’re also backed by a clinical supervisor who reviews session recordings, provides hands-on feedback, and collaborates on your treatment plan. It’s a little like getting a second opinion at every turn—without having to pay for it.

So why choose a practicum student?

Because it’s smart. Really smart.

Let’s break it down:

Affordability

Therapy with a student therapist is significantly more affordable, often more than half the price of seeing a fully licensed psychologist. For many, this makes the difference between accessing therapy and not. Quality care doesn’t have to be a luxury item.

Evidence-Based Care (and then some)

Research has shown that novice therapists often achieve comparable— sometimes even better—outcomes than seasoned professionals. Why? They’re highly motivated and engaged. They prepare meticulously. They’re still learning, yes, but that means they’re absorbing feedback like a sponge and bringing fresh eyes and energy to every session.

Supervision = Built-in Quality Control

Your student therapist isn’t doing this alone. Their supervisor is actively involved in reviewing recordings, helping with case conceptualization, and guiding treatment plans. You’re getting two clinicians working on your case for the price of one (or less).

More Flexible Scheduling

Need an evening or weekend appointment? Practicum students often have more availability than their senior counterparts. That means therapy can actually fit into your life, instead of becoming just one more thing you have to rearrange everything else around.

Still unsure? That’s okay. Starting therapy is a vulnerable step, no matter who you’re seeing. If you have questions, we welcome them. We even offer a free 15-minute consultation so you can meet the student therapist, ask whatever’s on your mind, and make sure the fit feels right.

Sometimes, the best therapists are the ones who haven’t been doing this forever, yet. And who are backed by the Cognitive & Interpersonal Therapy Centre (CITC) team that’s rooting for your growth, every step of the way.
